WG10 Initiative:
“Interparliamentary Alliance for the Empowerment of Women in the Economy & Diplomacy”
(Launch Event, Edinburgh; September 1st-4th, 2025)
Overview
The growing and valuable contributions of women to both the economy and diplomacy, have led to a greater recognition of the benefits of unique perspectives and special leadership styles that enhance international relations and economic development.
The representation of women in the international economy and in the field of diplomacy is still low however, despite the vast positive economic and diplomatic impacts women in leadership have already proven to bring to top tables. Women’s underrepresentation differs across nations and regions of the global system and in international diplomacy, in particular, and therefore all opportunities for further empowerment must be availed.
In leading global institutions, for example such as the UN, the EU, the World Trade Organization, European Commission, International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank, and other global governance institutions women are under-represented and, as an example, only a low percentage of ambassadors worldwide are women. At the same time, research increasingly shows that diversity enhances decision-making capabilities, better addresses the needs of a diverse population, and embodies a commitment to the democratic principles of inclusion and tolerance.
We are therefore inaugurating the “WG10 Initiative” with the aim of enhancing insights, further developing research and availing opportunities to further empower women within the global economy and diplomacy.
