At this point, the East German economy is essentially bankrupt, and Gorbachev and the Soviets do not have the resources to maintain control over their states. Politicians and diplomats meet many times beforehand, in order to decide to effectively merge both sides, as great socioeconomic challenges still exist in the east. On August 23rd, 1990 the East German parliament holds an election to decide whether to merge the East German states with West Germany. The vote is passed and East Germany would officially be merged with West Germany on October 3rd, 1990.
