Sino-Russian Border Conflict

Mutual distrust increased between the Soviet Union and China when disputes over borders increased in the early 1960s. When, in 1964, China demonstrated its nuclear capabilities, military build-up along the disputed borders escalated. In March 1969, the two forces clashed over Zhenbao Island, and the violence spread towards the Ussuri River border in Central Asia. Tensions were reduced in September when border talks resumed, but an official agreement was not reached until 1991.
