The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, also referred to as the First Kashmir War, was fought between India and Pakistan from 1947 to 1948. The first of four conflicts fought between the two newly independent nations over the region of Kashmir, the results of the war still affect the geopolitics of both countries. After fierce fighting on both sides, a formal ceasefire was declared on 1 January, 1948. The princely state of Kashmir and Jammu was consequently dissolved. Pakistan acquiesced approximately a third of the Kashmir region, and India the rest. Since UN intervention in the peace agreement, a further three wars have been fought and the issue of the Kashmir region continues to be a divisive issue.
